The word OJAUA is onomatopoeic of the shouting used by the farmers in Panama. The shouting or grito is one of the briefest demonstrations of Panamanian campesino music, but also one of the most important. It is used in the farmer’s daily life, and therefore in their mejorana and drum music as well.
The Wiimote Mejorana; a new instrument, built by Sandra James of Temple University, is based on mejorana music, which allow a performer to wirelessly trigger samples, synthesized sounds, and use natural gestures to affect the final sonic output. This is the first time that the Wiimote Mejorana will be used for a live performance.
